Such a commotion! Such distressing noise!

« on: February 07, 2010, 06:30:02 PM »

The Doctor's daughter was reported to be returning for the 09 specials.  Was I not paying attention and missed it?  Not that I'm complaining.

I agree that it was a rumour. It's not really surprising considering who else turned up. You'd have thought that if even Joan's granddaughter gets a visit, they'd have found a way to stick Jenny in there somewhere.

Then again, the Moff saved her so RTD probably left the Big Reunion to him.

Unless they meant simply the actress, as opposed to the character? Georgia Moffett was in Dreamland after all...

I'm glad any such rumours proved to be false. "The Doctor's Daughter" - both the story and the character - were for me perhaps the biggest mis-step of the past four seasons. Jenny's creation was a cheap, lame and seemingly spin-off-hungry device that would have been more at home in a Marvel comic. I hope she is never seen nor spoken of ever again.

As for the story, it was pretty inept to tease all of viewerdom with that title and all it might mean, only to blow every scrap of suspense and interest in what it was going to mean before the opening titles!

NB: Not certain I got the name 'Jenny' right, which shows just how memorable and interesting the character was. Also, I love Marvel comics.

That's not curmudgeonly, that's just straight-talking which we need more of.

I have ambivalent feelings towards that story. I liked the central SF story, but it did smell heavily of 'Dr Who jumps the shark.' In particular, the moments when June first appears: 'Hello, Dad!' and the 'jumping through lasers' sequence.

Also, the scene where Donna tells the Dr 'I've seen that look before.'

Actually, now you mention it, I'm starting to hate that story.

Besides that, I'd also be happy never to see Jilly again.

The only issue I had with this story was the laser jumping scene. I knew, because RTD wrote it, that it wasn't going to be his real daughter from the stories announcement. I also knew she would "die" (didn't expect the resurrection).

I just knew RTD would not give us his real daughter, and I knew it would be a one off even (although Moffatt may change that).

The few things that got me in the story as lame, were Donna guessing what the dates were, I mean that was way left field. And that the colony was only like 7 weeks old, I mean how in the world would a group of people only 7 weeks old not know that they were only 7 weeks old? or think a war was going on for ages and ages.

Aside from those two and the laser jump, the story was fine for me. Helped a bit by Martha bringing some humanity to it with her friendship of one of the Hath. No, it wasn't the best story New Who gave us, but it certainly wasn't the worst. And since I knew we weren't getting a real daughter perhaps I was able to enjoy it more than most.

My mistake, I meant as the show runner and idea's man, that he would not have had anyone write a story with a real family member for the Doctor. My points are still valid, while my memory of writers may not be Wink

I'd forgotten about the rumours of her return, then when I read the thread, I thought it odd that see wasn't visited during DT's final lap of honour. But as far as the Doctor's concerned she's dead

So do I. I didn't like the episode much on first viewing, and once I'd watched it again I liked it even less. If you had a machine to churn out soldiers, would it really produce Jenny? I would also have preferred it if the Doctor had started to appreciate her because of her intellect or emotional qualities rather than because she could do backflips.

Add in a very poor performance from Freema (who I generally like a great deal) in an episode where she seems to have been senselessly shoehorned in and then sidelined and for me it ends up as an episode I would rather forget.
